Even the most able sportsperson can be injured, whether accidently, due to overtraining,, poor preparation, or poor technique. Some people are, however not natural sportspeople but enjoy the activity and the competition. A large proportion of the community have sedentary jobs and try to balance their work/life activities by using sport to keep fit.

At Victoria Parade Physiotherapy Centre you will have a full history taken and your injury will be assessed. Treatment is aimed at providing the optimum conditions for repair and recovery of your injury and encouraging nature to do its part. Exercises and stretches for the soft tissues are vital to support the injured part and these need to be progressed over time.

In the early days following an injury to the bones, muscles, ligaments, joints and nerve tissue you should follow the advice of your physiotherapist and carry out the RICE program if required :

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

Your physiotherapist's knowledge and experience will help you work through the various stages of recovery from a sports injury. Some of the more common injuries from sporting activities are hamstring tears, knee joint injuries, ankle ligament tears, plantafasciitis, tendinopathies of the knee, hip, shoulder or ankle, and calf strains. These injuries can of course occur in other aspects of our lives, not just related to playing sport or being at the gym.

The benefits of the sporting activity or fitness regime far outweigh the problem of having an injury. The quicker the response, the best chance you have of a full recovery instead of a chronic underlying condition the prevents you from returning to you desired level of activity.
